Jack Addis's Portrait

With a focus on identity and community, Jack's practice is a study into how we adapt to and change with technology. His work has been exhibited in Asia, North and South America, Europe and online spaces. He was a founder member of the collaborative art practice MadeScapes^ and co-founder of phishermans.net an online digital art studio, of which he is a current active member.

For DeL 2015, Jack will discuss the impact of social media on artistic practice, and how he treats social media profiles as artwork or studio. How can students escape the ‘echo chamber of likes’ and get ideas from outside the institution to keep pushing theory and aesthetics?

What does it mean to be a post digital post graduate student?

I am interested in the effects of social media on artistic practice, and treating social media profiles as artwork or studio. I will discuss various lines of enquiry for this presentation:

Forever together

During the years between BA and MA I built a strong group of student peers though collaborative project MadeScapes^ which was great for gaining experience. By utilizing social media I am able keep up this community with peers from this group who are now around the UK.

Making new friends

Social media allows for meeting artists and curators from around with world, building lasting relationships, and gaining contacts.

Peer-to-peer teaching

By sharing the knowledge of our collective MAs and skills we are able to further each other’s learning. But also utilizing web recourses such as lynda.com, we can learn anything.

Networked critique

Though sharing work online we are able to critique each other’s work, which is important to escape the echo chamber of ‘likes’ and get ideas from outside the MA group to keep pushing theory and aesthetics.

Why are these things important? Increased opportunity

It is not easy funding a MA, or gaining exhibitions in a city like London. But by having a strong and outgoing online presence, the visibility of my practice and my large network has meant opportunities opening up to me around the world.
